Introducing – A. Lange & Söhne 1815 “Cuvette” Limited Edition (For the 10th Anniversary of the first Lange Boutique)

| By Brice Goulard | 3 min read |

While the brand A. Lange & Söhne was revived in 1994 (with the launch of an entire collection, including the iconic Lange 1), the first brand boutique only opened in September 2007. This means that this Dresden-based store now celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, and in order to pay tribute to 10 years of presence in the superb city of Dresden, A. Lange & Söhne have introduced a limited edition of the emblematic 1815, with a specifically engraved hinged “Cuvette” – dust cover or officer back – to make it really special.

Lange opened its first “proprietary” point of sale in September 2007, directly adjacent to the Dresden Frauenkirche, a landmark of the baroque city which was restored between 1994 and 2005. This impressive and handsome monument is thus the star of the show of this watch, as it is engraved on the caseback of the new 1815 limited edition. Indeed, a rare fact at Lange, is that the back (at least in the beginning) did not display the movement, but in this case a “Cuvette” is placed on the reverse side of the watch. However, if you are a lover of movements, there’s no drama (nor any great surprise), as this caseback is indeed a so-called “dust cover” or “officer back”, meaning that it can be opened thanks to a hinge – a system that is reminiscent of antique pocket watches.

This Limited Edition of the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 for the tenth birthday of the first Lange Boutique remains true, its back side apart, to the model we’ve known for several years now. Available in 10 pieces in white gold and 10 pieces in pink gold, it is still based on the 38.5mm case. Even with its double “Cuvette” back, it remains relatively slim – the thickness has thus far not yet been confirmed by Lange, however the standard version measures 8.8mm. We can expect this dust-cover to add one millimetre. The silver dial is also identical to the classical versions, with the clear and functional white dial, with black Arabic numerals and blued hands, and the small second counter at 6.

The caseback, once opened, reveals the well-known hand-wound calibre L051.1. This superbly decorated movement (gold chatons with blued screws, 3/4 plate in German silver, superb hand-engraving on the cock bridge, polished steel parts, bevelled angles…) offers 55h of power reserve and operates at a 3Hz frequency. This simple but superb movement is of course entirely manufactured in-house, in Glashütte, Germany.

As said, this Limited Edition of the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 is a 20 piece limited edition (10 in white gold, 10 in pink gold). Price to be confirmed – the standard 1815 is priced at 21,700 Euro, so expect close to 25,000 Euro for this “Cuvette” version. More details on www.alange-soehne.com.
